Oğulcan Temiz
I’m interested in anything that arouses emotions and the spirituality of a person. It can be photography, losing myself in philosophical thoughts of astronomy, looking at a painting and dreaming the events that are depicted on it, listening to old pieces of vinyl that I collect, playing to the piano while letting me and the piano’s soul merge on way to new worlds, hearing the wind on top of a mountain or in a beach to sense the dimension of time…
In a networking event, we were asked to write words that define us without thinking, and show our words to other people that we’ll meet and greet. Here were my words: Photography, astronomy, storytelling, writing.
Though, I also have a hunger to learn history, cultures, languages, do audiovisual contents, documentaries.
My mind often dreams and loses connection to reality in the day time, in search of a ‘thing’ that will get me inspired. Then, I use that inspiration to develop creative work on the thing I’m working on.

BIOGRAPHY

This is Mr. Oğulcan Temiz. Though, my friends have started to call me ‘Mr. Traveler’, after I had backpacked alone in Latin America for 8 months, learnt Spanish in there, and published a book about it. At first, it was annoying for me to be only called a traveler, which isn’t my profession. So, I had started to reply “No, I’m not a traveler!” to my new acquaintances. As the time goes by, I realised I am actually a traveler and have started to reply “Yes, I travel…” and continued “…to the stars by my telescope & astronomy, around the world by books, to the universe by wine & philosophy, into the music by my piano, to the past&present by my camera, to the future with new inspirations!” 🙂
The Undergraduate University Years
In high school, I had little idea on what profession to choose in university, which ended up in mechanical engineering. During the university,
–> I was dreaming of building scientific telescopes:
I was teaching astronomy & astrophotography in student clubs and governmental night sky festivals, translated astronomy webpages, elected to attend the TUBITAK National Observatory’s studentship program, attended astronomy seminars, read about telescope making, contacted astronomers and amateurs in Turkey.
–> I was dreaming of crafting ‘newly invented’ musical instruments and building concert halls:
I spent much of my free time in the Music Department during and after school, took some theoretical & applied lessons, read books about musical instrument making, contacted luthiers in Turkey. I also applied to pursue a minor degree at music in my university, but I failed and got declined with the reason of not being skilled enough to play Chopin in a piano concert. (Though that wasn’t my intention to pursue the degree; I had dreamt about building the piano of Chopin pianists).
–> I was dreaming of working in a camera, audio, and wristwatch production companies, like Zeiss, Dolby or Rolex.

Probably all those above can be summed as ‘mechanical groundwork of audiovisuals’.
To channel my desires on them in the summer internships, I contacted many universities and companies around the world for 3 consecutive years during my undergrad years (though I also couldn’t apply for the majority of the opportunities due to lacking EU or US passports). I failed. I ended up interning in military R&D facilities; far away from the audiovisuals and the ideals of my soul. That killed my eagerness on those topics and alienated me from being a mechanical engineer.
The gap inside me, left by the disappearance of them, was filled with my new curiosity about Latin America and the Spanish language. It happened when I met people from those countries during my exchange student year in Canada. Until that time, my only acquaintance with them was from Panini World Cup footballer stickers as a kid: I was ashamed that I didn’t have knowledge of the countries of the people I was talking to.
