Diaries-1: Independence Day in Guatemala
15 September is the Independence Day of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica
Vivir mi vida – Marc Anthony, Bailamos, Me Duelo Corazon – Enrique Iglesias, etc… are one of the few songs that sounds familiar, coming from the loud and excited bands in front of me.
Everything started running together with the high school students who were carrying flags and a torch after the National Anthem. But of course, it should be considered being under the effect of Bacardi, which 1.75 lt of it was around 10 USD. 🙂
It was curious that, under the effect of Bacardi, I could comfortably explain the history of the Turkey in Spanish to the family I’m living with, or speak with people on the streets; whereas on other times, it requires quite a bit of effort and concentration for me to understand people. Reminds me those lovely yearly book letters that I wrote to some of you when I was under a similar effect. There’s this sacred tree in Avatar, that everyone connects to. It is the rum based spirits 😛
I realized that, in order to reach higher places in burocracy of here, you need connections from higher places. I wish I was carrying the business card of the Deputy Minister, instead of leaving in the home, so that I could overcome the police control point to watch the event from the VIP terrace, which is a balcony of an old colonial building. Yet when I entered there before secretly, they immediately recognized me in the balcony and threw me out, due to my different physicality among traditional dressed people.
