Brief summary of Yedigün Gameboy Edition:

Year: November 2001

TV ad video: Below.

As someone from Turkey who proudly owns the highly sought-after Yedigün edition of the Gameboy Color, I’ve always been fascinated by the history of this unique item. However, my journey to uncover its story wasn’t easy. Much of the information I found online was scarce, and, disappointingly, a lot of it turned out to be inaccurate. It’s not too surprising, considering most of the details were shared by foreigners. Though I have some hazy childhood memories of the product and its advertisements, I wanted more concrete details. This led me to dive deep into research within Turkish media outlets.

My quest began with a simple yet crucial question: When was this special Gameboy Color edition released? To find the answer, I explored Yedigün’s official website via the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine. This page helped me uncover the type of promotion, the exact dates it ran, and how many units were distributed.

Units were distributed through a raffle. Here’s a bit of what I found on the promotion page (translated for clarity):

Between 01/07/2001 and 30/10/2001, send any two 600 ml Yedigün Caps with Gameboy written on them or the orange opening ring to PK 300 80223 Şişli-Istanbul and participate in the lottery. Win one of 1000 colorful gameboys!

The draw will be held on 09/11/2001 at Levent Caddesi, No:29 1. Levent-Istanbul in the presence of a notary public. The winners will be announced in Hürriyet Newspaper on November 13, 2001. Persons under the age of 18 cannot participate in this campaign. This campaign is organized with the permission of MPI dated 22.06.2001 and numbered B.02.I MPI.0.13.00.02/962-5271.

I discovered a list of 1,000 lucky winners and another 1,000 reserve winners. It was quite a surprise to see a friend from middle school among the winners! I suspect additional units might have been distributed internally within the company or to special members.

But my curiosity didn’t stop there. I remembered a TV commercial for this promotion and set out to find it. This task proved to be daunting, as I sifted through countless videos on YouTube, spending hours in the process. The Yedigün advertisement seemed to be rarer compared to other frequently aired TV ads from that period. Eventually, I found one, but the quality was far from perfect. I’m hopeful that someone with the right skills and tools might be able to enhance it in the future. Despite the poor quality, I’ve uploaded the advertisement to my YouTube channel for everyone to see. Here’s the source video that I managed to trim and share.

Interestingly enough, I also stumbled upon another Gameboy raffle hosted by Yedigün, dating back to November 2005.

What you need to do to win the gift is very simple: You send us your photos with a Yedigün drinking scene. The most fun, most beautiful picture of the week is determined by the Yedigün Jury Members on Monday of the following week and “The most beautiful Yedigün drinking moment photo of the week” is exhibited on the website for a week. You win a Gameboy and Pokemon game from us with the picture you submit. Your gift will be delivered to you by mail within 15 days. Is it a Nintendo DS or a Nintendo Advance SP? I’m not entirely sure. However, from what I know, it’s likely not a special edition; if it were, we probably would have heard about it by now.
